How do tanning beds work?
Tanning beds imitate the sun. The sun emits three kinds of ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVC, UVB, and UVA rays. UVC rays are harmful but they are stopped by the ozone. UVB rays start the tanning process by stimulating melanocytes in your skin to produce melanin. They are sometimes known as the reddening rays. UVA rays complete the tanning process by causing the melanin pigments to darken. They are sometimes known as the bronzing rays. The best tan comes from exposing your skin to both rays. Our goal at Eclipse Tan is to provide you with the best tanning experience by helping you to achieve the best color.
How does the skin tan?
Tanning takes place in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. About five percent of the cells in your epidermis are cells called melanocytes. When melanocytes are exposed to UVB light, they produce melanin. Melanin is the pigment which is responsible for your tan. When melanin is exposed to UVA light, it darkens.
How often should I tan?
In order to build a tan, it is important to tan regularly. You can tan up to once every 24 hours, but it can take 48 – 72 hours for your tan to fully develop. You can build up your tan by going to an indoor facility three to four times a week. Using the proper indoor tanning lotion will help you achieve color faster and make it last longer.
How long does it take to develop a tan?
You will begin to notice color after a few tanning sessions, but it may take a few weeks of regular tanning to get the tan you are looking for. If you are developing a base tan before going on a trip or an event, you would want to start tanning about four weeks beforehand.
I burn outside, can I tan indoors?
It may be easier for you to achieve the tan you want by tanning indoors. Eclipse Tan recommends starting with a short exposure time and increasing that time gradually. However, if you do not tan from the sun, you will probably not tan from tanning lamps. We would then recommend that you try out one of our beautiful custom spray tans.
Do I have to use eyewear?
Yes! Federal law requires that we supply you with the approved eyewear. We highly recommend that you wear it.
Why do I need tanning lotion?
If you are tanning, a tanning lotion is a must. Tanning lotion helps to prepare your skin to receive uv light. Using an approved tanning lotion not only helps develop a great tan but it also helps to moisturize the skin and replace nutrients your skin may be lacking. The products we offer at Eclipse Tan contain moisturizers and nutrients that will not only help you to achieve the best possible tan but will also provide you with great skin care.
