Tanning salons are places where we go to take a few minutes for ourselves, relax, reflect on the day, and clear our minds. Everything from the way you are greeted when you walk in to the scent of your new tanning lotion to the lighting in the rooms plays a roll in the overall tanning experience.
If you are looking for a new place to tan, this list of important expectations might help.
It is true. The tanning consultants give direct representation of the business. If the employees are happy, friendly, and helpful, chances are, the salon owner/manager is doing something right. Every single time you walk through the door to your tanning salon, a friendly face should greet you. The employee should be helpful, not pushy, and eager to get you into the perfect tanning bed with the best products (tanning lotion, facial lotion, and moisturizer) to help you achieve the best tan. If you are new to tanning, we suggest finding a salon with educated, friendly employees to ensure you are tanning with confidence.
2. Salon Cleanliness
The tanning salon of your choice must be clean. This is not something that you should waiver on. Let’s face it, if you are going to take your clothes off and lay in a tanning bed, that tanning bed must be spotless, appearing to have never been used. It is perfectly fine to ask your tanning consultant what product they used to clean your tanning bed. Most salons use a product called Lucasol, which is a hospital grade disinfectant. If you feel that your tanning bed is not clean and you either don’t want to walk out or have minutes/tans at a specific tanning salon, please know that it is okay to politely ask the tanning consultant to clean your tanning bed again.
3. Skincare Products
What tanning skincare products does your tanning salon carry? Skincare is such an important factor in helping to ensure you are getting the best tan possible while taking care of your skin. It is so important to use a tanning product that contains quality ingredients to help moisturize, firm, and of course tan your skin. The top tanning skincare lines out there are Designer Skin, California Tan, Australian Gold, Swedish Beauty, Supre, Hempz and Devoted Creations. There are other lines out there but those are the most common. When you purchase your tanning products, make sure you are purchasing them from a tanning salon. Your purchase will go a long way when it comes to your relationship with the salon employees and of course, your tan will develop faster and your skin will thank you.
4. Tanning Beds
The tanning beds you are tanning in should be functioning. The beds may not look very fancy but that is ok. Your tanning consultant should be able to explain to you the different beds and what bed puts out UVA (bronzing rays) and UVB (reddening rays) light. The main difference is that lamps that put out UVA rays will tan you but since they give your skin more of a bronze tan, the color may not be as noticeable right away and will develop over a few hours. UVB rays give you more immediate color. It is a good idea to switch up the tanning beds that you go in. Now, with that being said, please understand that some times, tanning beds need to be repaired and sometimes tanning lamps just go out for unknown reasons. That is okay as long as the salon employees/owner is aware of the issue and is in the process of fixing the tanning bed. Usually, the salon compensates the customer in one way or another and if they don’t that is okay too. I recommend making sure the next time you tan, you are able to tan in a different bed or the bed is fixed. Just remember, don’t judge the bed because it may be a few years old. Judge the bed because it is clean, well maintained, and it gives you a great tan.
At my tanning salon, Eclipse Tan, I like to provide my customers with extras. For example, on every tanning bed there is a clean, neatly folded towel and a pair of sanitized goggles. In the tanning rooms there is a shelf with deodorant, make-up remover, cotton rounds, and Kleenexes. In my opinion, tanning salons should at least provide tanners with a clean towel to use. Some salons require their customers to purchase goggles. Usually this is because unfortunately, too many people take the goggles provided for them. As far as the deodorant and other items go, this is completely up to the salon whether or not these things are provided. In my opinion it is the little touches that makes my salon unique and keeps my customers happy.
When it comes to finding the right tanning salon for you, please take these five elements into consideration. You will find that it is totally worth going the extra mile or two down the road for quality service. Happy Tanning!
