When people find out my occupation, I often get asked, “How did you get into spray tanning?” Well, if you are wondering too, here it goes...
In 2008 I began spray tanning at a local tanning salon that I used to manage. Shortly after I began spray tanning, the business sadly, was sold. As you can imagine, the transition was an emotional one. I had invested so much time and effort into the salon. I developed relationships with some amazing people. To be honest, I felt as though I lost apart of myself. I loved the tanning industry and frankly, I was good at my job. At the time, I was still in college with one more year to go. Not wanting to lose touch with an industry I loved so much, I opened my own spray tanning business in 2010 and took appointments around my school schedule. This was the birth of Eclipse.
I was lucky enough to find the perfect location and I began building a clientele. However, as they say, Rome wasn’t built overnight and I have to tell you, neither was Eclipse. I remember praying for the day I would have 10 spray tans booked for a week. After all, custom spray tanning was not too popular and convincing someone to take their clothes off in front of you and let you tan their body was not the easiest task.
In the Spring of 2011, I graduated from SIUE with a degree in Elementary Education. So naturally, my next step was to get a teaching job. I began teaching in the fall of 2011 and I continued to spray tan. Over time my clientele grew and I began scheduling more and more spray tans every month.
Fast forward to July 2014. Opportunity came knocking at my door. After much prayer, consideration, and support from my family, I became the owner of Eclipse Tan. Although I love children, I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing.
Opening Eclipse was no easy task. It was hard, really hard. I purchased a failing salon, found myself working 55+ hours a week, and I gained about ten pounds. I took over the business in August, aka the beginning of slow season in the tanning world. But, thanks to my extremely loyal clients and the fall wedding season, I found myself getting busier and busier with spray tans.
Eventually I began setting bigger and bigger goals. Goals such as, figure out the science behind social media and how to use it to my advantage (although I understand most of it, I’m still learning), gain more spray tan clients, get a new tanning bed, and provide the best customer service I know how to provide. I knew I had come so far but I still have much further to go.
Over 2016, I was able to purchase a beautiful Ergoline Affinity 500 tanning bed and I was blessed with some wonderful friends and employees that allowed me to take off a little bit more and stress a little bit less. I also added a boutique to my salon that carries trendy, affordable, women’s clothing. My biggest accomplishment of 2016 was, simply put, an answer to a long term prayer. I proudly provided 900 custom spray tans. These spray tans meant that 900 times people walked out of my salon feeling more confident than when they walked in. It does not get any better than that!
Here we are, 2017. This year Eclipse will celebrate, 3 years in this location and 7 years as a business. I will personally celebrate 9 years of spray tanning and 12 years of being in the tanning industry. My goal for 2017 is to continue to provide the best customer service possible and most importantly, thank God every day for this wonderful opportunity.
So here’s to 900 and believing in yourself.
Well winter is in full swing. Of course around here the weather is pretty unpredictable. But one thing is for certain, it’s definitely not summer. Here are a few of my favorite things for winter in Illinois.
1. Legend by Norvell Spray Tan Solution
I have been spray tanning with Norvell products for nine years. I love their solution in general but Legend is absolutely wonderful, especially in the winter. It is an aloe based solution which not only leaves my skin more moisturized after my spray session but my color usually lasts about 3-5 days longer than if I used the original solution. The cosmetic bronzers are much darker than most of the other solutions but don’t let that scare you. Once I rinsed off the Legend solution, I had a beautiful, natural tan. The scent is Aloe and Green Tea.
One Full Body Legend Spray Tan at Eclipse Tan is $40.
2. Long Sleeve Piko Tops
These shirts are AMAZING! First and most importantly, Piko’s are 95% bamboo making them the one of the softest shirts in your closet, guaranteed. Not only are these shirts super soft but they are the perfect shirt to dress up with a fun necklace, scarf, vest, or jacket. If you do not own a Piko, I highly recommend picking one up. You won’t regret it!
Long Sleeve Piko Tops are $28 at Eclipse.
3. Designer Skin DHA Bronzing Drops
Since discovering this little bottle of magic, I will not go without. The DHA bronzing drops allow you to turn your moisturizer into a sunless tanner and they also allow you to add more DHA to your current tanning lotion without having to buy a new bottle just because you want more DHA bronzers. I started adding DHA drops to my body lotion every other day and I have noticed that my it makes my spray tan last longer and helps to give me color when I am unable to get a spray or tan right away.
Designer Skin DHA Bronzing Drops at Eclipse are $29.00.
P.S. Hempz Triple Moisture Frosted Peppermint & Vanilla Sugar is AMAZING.
Hempz Frosted Peppermint & Vanilla Sugar is $26.00 at Eclipse.
Christmas is my favorite time of year. It is a time when we gather with family and friends to celebrate the birth of Christ, admire twinkling lights perfectly hung throughout our communities, and show our love and appreciation to those closest to us by giving them something they are sure to love. To help make your Christmas a little more magical and less stressful, we have created a gift giving guide to help you give that special someone a gift they are sure to love.
Blanket scarves make wonderful gifts for any lady in your life. They are super fashionable and are sure to keep her warm this holiday season. Our blanket scarves come in many colors and designs. For only $25, they make a great gift.
Booties are trending this year. Wear them with skinny jeans or your favorite dress. Did we mention they look beautiful under the Christmas tree? Our booties range from $40 to $45.
Everyone loves a good skin care product and Hempz is by far our favorite moisturizer. Hempz moisturizers are packed with wonderful ingredients to keep your skin feeling soft and looking radiant. Did you know hemp helps attract moisture to the skin and keeps it locked in all day? This holiday season, Hempz released a limited edition Triple Moisture Frosted Peppermint & Vanilla Sugar moisturizer that smells great and keeps your skin hydrated all day. We also carry Hempz Original, Triple Whipped, and limited edition Pure Hemp. Hempz moisturizers range from $20 to $26. Hempz moisturizers are paraben free, gluten free, 100% vegan, and THC free.
Give the gift of bronze and warmth this holiday season. During the winter we spend most of our time indoors. We lose our summer tans and as the sun begins to set earlier our bodies do not receive the sunlight that makes us feel better physically and mentally. Tanning during the winter helps to prevent seasonal depression and keeps us looking and feeling fabulous. Our tanning gift certificates make the perfect stocking stuffer.
I hope that you have a wonderful, magical Christmas season with those you love the most. Be sure to check out our facebook and instagram, @eclipsetanandboutique.
Doesn’t this time of year really make you appreciate the beauty of the Midwest? Leaves blanketing the ground, pumpkins on your neighbor’s door step, and the delicious scent coming from that pot of chili you are cooking… fall is here.
While fall is a beautiful season that I can definitely appreciate, the crisp morning air and chilly nights remind me that my summer is officially over and I need to maintain some color and moisturize my skin more often to prevent the seasonal ashy skin look.
Tanning in a bed two to three times a week will help to provide your body with the Vitamin D it is missing from the summer sun and helps to combat against seasonal depression. Not to mention, having a little bit of color does wonders for the self-esteem. For me a tan means that magically my clothes will fit better and as a result I will feel better.
If you find yourself in a time crunch and a little pasty, Eclipse Tan offers custom spray tanning. A spray tan will ensure that you have a beautiful tan for any occasion.
The key ingredient to maintaining beautiful color this fall whether you are tanning in a bed or spray tanning is a good moisturizer. Implementing a moisturizer into your daily routine will do wonders for your skin. Not only will your skin feel better but it will look better.
At Eclipse Tan we have great tanning beds, provide beautiful custom spray tans, and carry the perfect moisturizer to keep your skin looking fantastic all year long.
Tanning salons are places where we go to take a few minutes for ourselves, relax, reflect on the day, and clear our minds. Everything from the way you are greeted when you walk in to the scent of your new tanning lotion to the lighting in the rooms plays a roll in the overall tanning experience.
If you are looking for a new place to tan, this list of important expectations might help.
It is true. The tanning consultants give direct representation of the business. If the employees are happy, friendly, and helpful, chances are, the salon owner/manager is doing something right. Every single time you walk through the door to your tanning salon, a friendly face should greet you. The employee should be helpful, not pushy, and eager to get you into the perfect tanning bed with the best products (tanning lotion, facial lotion, and moisturizer) to help you achieve the best tan. If you are new to tanning, we suggest finding a salon with educated, friendly employees to ensure you are tanning with confidence.
2. Salon Cleanliness
The tanning salon of your choice must be clean. This is not something that you should waiver on. Let’s face it, if you are going to take your clothes off and lay in a tanning bed, that tanning bed must be spotless, appearing to have never been used. It is perfectly fine to ask your tanning consultant what product they used to clean your tanning bed. Most salons use a product called Lucasol, which is a hospital grade disinfectant. If you feel that your tanning bed is not clean and you either don’t want to walk out or have minutes/tans at a specific tanning salon, please know that it is okay to politely ask the tanning consultant to clean your tanning bed again.
3. Skincare Products
What tanning skincare products does your tanning salon carry? Skincare is such an important factor in helping to ensure you are getting the best tan possible while taking care of your skin. It is so important to use a tanning product that contains quality ingredients to help moisturize, firm, and of course tan your skin. The top tanning skincare lines out there are Designer Skin, California Tan, Australian Gold, Swedish Beauty, Supre, Hempz and Devoted Creations. There are other lines out there but those are the most common. When you purchase your tanning products, make sure you are purchasing them from a tanning salon. Your purchase will go a long way when it comes to your relationship with the salon employees and of course, your tan will develop faster and your skin will thank you.
4. Tanning Beds
The tanning beds you are tanning in should be functioning. The beds may not look very fancy but that is ok. Your tanning consultant should be able to explain to you the different beds and what bed puts out UVA (bronzing rays) and UVB (reddening rays) light. The main difference is that lamps that put out UVA rays will tan you but since they give your skin more of a bronze tan, the color may not be as noticeable right away and will develop over a few hours. UVB rays give you more immediate color. It is a good idea to switch up the tanning beds that you go in. Now, with that being said, please understand that some times, tanning beds need to be repaired and sometimes tanning lamps just go out for unknown reasons. That is okay as long as the salon employees/owner is aware of the issue and is in the process of fixing the tanning bed. Usually, the salon compensates the customer in one way or another and if they don’t that is okay too. I recommend making sure the next time you tan, you are able to tan in a different bed or the bed is fixed. Just remember, don’t judge the bed because it may be a few years old. Judge the bed because it is clean, well maintained, and it gives you a great tan.
At my tanning salon, Eclipse Tan, I like to provide my customers with extras. For example, on every tanning bed there is a clean, neatly folded towel and a pair of sanitized goggles. In the tanning rooms there is a shelf with deodorant, make-up remover, cotton rounds, and Kleenexes. In my opinion, tanning salons should at least provide tanners with a clean towel to use. Some salons require their customers to purchase goggles. Usually this is because unfortunately, too many people take the goggles provided for them. As far as the deodorant and other items go, this is completely up to the salon whether or not these things are provided. In my opinion it is the little touches that makes my salon unique and keeps my customers happy.
When it comes to finding the right tanning salon for you, please take these five elements into consideration. You will find that it is totally worth going the extra mile or two down the road for quality service. Happy Tanning!
Let’s talk tanning lotions. When it’s time to purchase a new tanning lotion most people, unless they have worked in a tanning salon or have been tanning for quite some time, need a little guidance when it comes to finding the perfect lotion for their skin type and tanning goals.
So, if you are in search of a good tanning lotion, this will hopefully help to point you in the right direction. I am going to cover the basics of tanning intensifiers, bronzers, and tingles.
What is an intensifier?
A tanning intensifier is a lotion that simply helps users to build a natural tan. Now, this does not mean that other lotions don’t help to build a natural tan but intensifiers do not have bronzers in them so the color that the tanner will see is only their natural tan. Most intensifiers are packed with moisturizing ingredients that help to hydrate and condition the skin.
Tanning intensifiers are great for users that are just starting to tan, perfect for users that do not care for bronzers, and helpful to break tanning plateaus. Tanning plateaus occur when tanners use the same tanning lotion and same tanning bed over a period of time. A few intensifiers we recommend are:
What about these bronzing lotions?
There are different types of bronzing lotions. There are lotions that are natural bronzers and lotions that are delayed bronzers or DHA bronzers. Overall, bronzers help to enhance the tanning process and give tanners faster, darker results.
Natural bronzers are lotions that contain ingredients such as black walnut extract, henna, caramel, and black tea. Natural bronzers give tanners immediate color without worrying about streaking.
Natural bronzers are great for any type of tanner. A few natural bronzers we recommend are:
DHA bronzers are lotions that contain DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA provides tanners with extra color when left on the skin for at least two hours, ideally four hours. Tanners are encouraged to allow the lotion to sit on their skin so that it can oxidize. DHA can continue to develop over a 24 hour period. It is very important to know that when you use a lotion that has DHA in it, that lotion needs to be rubbed in evenly and you need to wash your hands after your tanning session. DHA is also the bronzing ingredient in spray tan solutions that makes the skin tan. Obviously, the percentage of DHA in spray tan solutions is much higher than what is in tanning lotions.
Tanning lotions that contain DHA are great for tanners that have a tan and just want to maintain the tan by only tanning once or twice a week. These lotions are also great for tanners that want more color than what an intensifier or natural bronzer will give them. Some DHA bronzers we recommend are:
What are tingle tanning lotions?
Tingle tanning lotions are tanning lotions that, when applied to the skin, create a tingling feeling. This is because the lotion increases blood circulation and oxygen on the surface of the skin to enhance the tanning process. Tingle tanning lotions cause the skin to become red and itchy, hence why they are called tingle tanning lotions. Despite the reddening and tingling feeling, some tanners like to use tingle because they like the tan the lotion gives them.
Tingle lotions contain the same ingredients as other lotions, some may have natural bronzers and some may have DHA bronzers. The difference is the benzyl nicotinate, which causes the tingle, has been added. Tingle tanning lotions are for experienced tanners. If you are interested in using a tingle but have never tried one, we recommend using a tingle lotion that has a low tingle factor and trying it on a small patch of skin. Please do not ever use a tingle tanning lotion on the facial area. It is also very important to note that if you use a tingle tanning lotion we do not recommend handling pets or children because the tingle can transfer. Users should shower before coming into physical contact with children or pets. Some tingle tanning lotions that we recommend are:
It is important to remember to use salon quality tanning lotions. When you purchase tanning lotions online or from an outside source, you risk purchasing a product that could have been tampered with or expired. Tanning lotions purchased at places like Wal-Mart or your local drug stores are NOT good for tanning beds. The product may say that it is for indoor tanning beds but the ingredients are not good for the tanning bed acrylics and they definitely are not good for your skin.
When you purchase tanning lotions in a tanning salon, you are supporting your local salon and you can be sure that you are purchasing a quality product. Remember, healthy, moisturized skin tans darker and stays longer.
Happy Tanning! XO
It's no secret that spray tanning is a growing trend. People spray tan for weddings, reunions, birthdays, vacations, or just to keep some color. However, most of the time and understandably, people don't know all that much about spray tans. I have been spray tanning clients since January of 2009. So, hopefully I can answer some questions and explain spray tanning.
There are two different ways to get a spray tan: booth spray tans vs. custom spray tans.
First, the booth spray tans. Chances are you have heard of the Mystic booth or VersaSpa and there is one fairly close to where you live. The booth is essentially a machine that mists the customer with their choice of spray tan solution. What I mean by choice is that most salons allow customers to choose from a light, medium, or dark spray tan solution. The spray tan booth is perfect for customers that do not feel comfortable allowing someone to spray tan them. However, it is important to remember that the booth does not cover the body as evenly with solution as when someone is actually applying the solution. Also, a booth spray tan typically only lasts about three to five days.
The second way to get a spray tan is the custom spray tan. This is where a trained professional spray tans solution on the client. Similar to the booth, clients are given a choice of the spray tan solution used. After seeing your skin tone, your spray tan artist will also give you his/her opinion on the solution that will give you the best, most natural color. A huge plus to custom spray tans is that the spray tan artist is able to cover the entire body which helps to avoid streaking and discoloration. Custom spray tans usually last about seven to ten days. The most important thing to remember when getting a custom spray tan is that you need to find a trained spray tan artist that has experience in spray tanning. If you cannot find a trained spray tan artist, you might be better off going into a booth.
There is a cost difference between booth spray tans and custom spray tans. It is important for users to understand that custom spray tan solution costs more and you are paying for a trained professional to spray tan you rather than a machine. If you are too uncomfortable to get a custom spray tan I totally understand. If that is the case, I personally would recommend finding a Norvell Auto Revolution booth or VersaSpa booth. Those booths have the most up to date spray tan technology right now.
Booth spray tans will range anywhere from $5 to $35 at most salons. The price depends on the type of booth, if you purchase a spray tan package, if the salon has a sale/promotion going on, the type of booth/solution, and what products are being used (prep spray and post moisturizer).
Custom spray tans range anywhere from $25 to $60 at most salons. The price depends on the solution being used, if you purchase a spray tan package, if the salon has a sale/promotion going on, and the spray tan artist’s experience. Some spray tan artists travel as well. Having a spray tan artist come into your home generally costs a little more due to travel time and set up/break down.
Now, it is no secret that some businesses advertise custom spray tans for as little as $10. As a true professional spray tan artist, salons and people that do this make me insane. First of all, custom spray tanning is an art. I’ve spent countless hours practicing my spray tan technique and I continue to educate myself by reading, watching videos, and attending seminars on spray tanning. The time and effort that I have put into perfecting my art should not go unnoticed, underappreciated, and underpaid. My customers know that when they come to me for a spray tan, they will have a professional, personal, and quality experience. They leave my salon feeling confident that they have a beautiful tan.
As for the $10 spray tans, I promise you will be getting a $10 spray tan. Understand that you cannot expect someone to put forth their best effort if they are not being paid to do so. Not to mention if their best effort is only worth $10, what does that tell you? If you are willing to risk your tan, then by all means go for it. If you want a quality, professional experience I would look elsewhere.
Hopefully this answers questions about booth spray tans vs. custom spray tans.
I want to leave you by saying that if you had a bad spray tan experience, I am truly sorry and I understand the embarrassment you felt. However, PLEASE remember there are professional spray tan artists out there that truly care about your spray tan just as much as you do. Don’t let one bad spray tan keep you from finding someone that is going to provide you with a quality, memorable spray tan experience.
