When people find out my occupation, I often get asked, “How did you get into spray tanning?” Well, if you are wondering too, here it goes...
In 2008 I began spray tanning at a local tanning salon that I used to manage. Shortly after I began spray tanning, the business sadly, was sold. As you can imagine, the transition was an emotional one. I had invested so much time and effort into the salon. I developed relationships with some amazing people. To be honest, I felt as though I lost apart of myself. I loved the tanning industry and frankly, I was good at my job. At the time, I was still in college with one more year to go. Not wanting to lose touch with an industry I loved so much, I opened my own spray tanning business in 2010 and took appointments around my school schedule. This was the birth of Eclipse.
I was lucky enough to find the perfect location and I began building a clientele. However, as they say, Rome wasn’t built overnight and I have to tell you, neither was Eclipse. I remember praying for the day I would have 10 spray tans booked for a week. After all, custom spray tanning was not too popular and convincing someone to take their clothes off in front of you and let you tan their body was not the easiest task.
In the Spring of 2011, I graduated from SIUE with a degree in Elementary Education. So naturally, my next step was to get a teaching job. I began teaching in the fall of 2011 and I continued to spray tan. Over time my clientele grew and I began scheduling more and more spray tans every month.
Fast forward to July 2014. Opportunity came knocking at my door. After much prayer, consideration, and support from my family, I became the owner of Eclipse Tan. Although I love children, I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing.
Opening Eclipse was no easy task. It was hard, really hard. I purchased a failing salon, found myself working 55+ hours a week, and I gained about ten pounds. I took over the business in August, aka the beginning of slow season in the tanning world. But, thanks to my extremely loyal clients and the fall wedding season, I found myself getting busier and busier with spray tans.
Eventually I began setting bigger and bigger goals. Goals such as, figure out the science behind social media and how to use it to my advantage (although I understand most of it, I’m still learning), gain more spray tan clients, get a new tanning bed, and provide the best customer service I know how to provide. I knew I had come so far but I still have much further to go.
Over 2016, I was able to purchase a beautiful Ergoline Affinity 500 tanning bed and I was blessed with some wonderful friends and employees that allowed me to take off a little bit more and stress a little bit less. I also added a boutique to my salon that carries trendy, affordable, women’s clothing. My biggest accomplishment of 2016 was, simply put, an answer to a long term prayer. I proudly provided 900 custom spray tans. These spray tans meant that 900 times people walked out of my salon feeling more confident than when they walked in. It does not get any better than that!
Here we are, 2017. This year Eclipse will celebrate, 3 years in this location and 7 years as a business. I will personally celebrate 9 years of spray tanning and 12 years of being in the tanning industry. My goal for 2017 is to continue to provide the best customer service possible and most importantly, thank God every day for this wonderful opportunity.
So here’s to 900 and believing in yourself.
